THE BOOKWORMERY
Rundell rumbles, life as a book magnet, recommendations and other thoughts
Well, what a week it’s been! I have seen TWO friends (two and a HALF if you include the PEACHY baby one of them has), picked THREE ripe tomatoes, seen FOUR potato shoot emerge from the earth, written FIVE articles and acquired about SIX million books – this last being the main subject of today’s post, in what is actually a desperate attempt to identify how it happened. Happens. And keeps on happening, in a spatially-unsustainable way. I’m beginning to appraise my acquisitions purely in terms of width and how many more yards – actually, it’s probably just inches now – more shelving I can possibly fit into this house.
I’ve also been having some thoughts on Queen Camilla’s ‘gift’ of Katherine Rundell’s Impossible Creatures to 870,000 Year Six children, which appears to have been paid for at least in part by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport – ie the taxpayer – which to my and many others’ minds raises a number of questions.
A date for your diaries if you are one for book events - on August 21 I’m in Colyton, Devon and conversation with the lovely Ros Byam-Shaw - tickets here. That’s halfway through a massive booksale that runs 21-22nd, so be here at some point even if you don’t fancy us yakking in the evening!
I hope you’re managing in this heat. London is vile, Norfolk just about bearable and I cling to the certainty that autumn must come if we can all just hang on long enough.
Happy, if sweaty, reading
Love,
Lucy
